Arts Council England have just announced a £200,000 capital grant to assist Matt’s Gallery to move its permanent home to a brand-new building at the Bellway development in Ponton Road.

This latest success brings the reality of Nine Elms as an arts and cultural destination a step closer as Matt’s Gallery will attract visitors and residents to regular exhibitions and events.

Once fitted out, the new complex will include double height gallery space, a home for the gallery’s extensive archive, artists’ studios, and a space for talks, screenings and performances.

The gallery will become a vital part of the Nine Elms community, bringing the work of internationally acclaimed artists to Wandsworth.

Cllr Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council said:

“We have worked hard to bring Matt’s Gallery to Nine Elms, so this confirmation of funding from the Arts Council is excellent news as it paves the way for Matt’s Gallery to become permanently established here.

Wandsworth Council is committed to supporting the gallery to finalise arrangements and meet their fundraising targets. This will enable Matt’s Gallery to move into a new state-of-the-art gallery complex with space for their outreach work and studios.”

Together with Bellway, we are excited to welcome Matt’s Gallery as an anchor cultural organisation in the heart of Nine Elms, furthering our ambitions to provide contemporary art experiences for our residents and visitors.”

Emma Hamlett, Sales Director of Bellway Homes said:

“In order to reflect the rich history of this site, we felt it was fitting to include an art gallery and contribute to the local vision to create a strong arts and cultural scene across the wider Nine Elms regeneration site at The Residence. We are also proud to have donated money for the tapestry that we enjoyed showing off along with the Matt’s Gallery team earlier this year.

The space that will house Matt’s Gallery is almost ready and it will be an excellent addition to this development’s offerings. It is important that we offer a wide mix of amenities for our residents and art is no exception when it comes to building community spirit and a creative scene, which homebuyers are looking for today. We welcome the news that the Arts Council has offered Matt’s Gallery this capital grant to help it relocate to a permanent home in Nine Elms and look forward to welcoming the Matt’s Gallery team in 2019 when preparation work begins.

Until now if you thought of arts on the south bank of the Thames, you would think of Tate Modern and its surroundings, but now Nine Elms is evolving into another major cultural quarter.”

Director and Founder of Matt’s Gallery, Robin Klassnik OBE said:

“We are delighted to receive this support from Arts Council England at this crucial time in the history of Matt’s Gallery as we enter our 40th year. It is wonderful that the Arts Council continue to put their faith and trust in valuing and championing the gallery and its artists.

“We are looking forward to making an artistic mark on the new neighbourhood of Nine Elms as we continue to build on our history of high quality, challenging contemporary art and bring new audiences together with those who already follow us.”
