Local school children were first to try out a newly refurbished sports court in Battersea after the Mayor of Wandsworth cut the ribbon.
The Mayor, Cllr Piers McCausland, joined Cllr Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council, and Battersea Power Station CEO Simon Murphy to officially open the community sports space on Ascalon Street, SW8 on Friday, September 14.
The ball court was refurbished by Careys Civil Engineering, a leading construction group in the UK and Ireland, in partnership with Battersea Power Station Development Company.
In a Wandsworth Council consultation local residents asked for a space to be able to play racket sports as well as other games, so the ball court was refurbished with racket sports in mind. As soon as the court was open, pupils from nearby St George’s CE Primary School got the chance to take part in badminton sessions.
Cllr McCausland said:
“I was proud to open the refurbished court today alongside Nine Elms residents who had voiced their need for an improved facility in the heart of the estate.
“It’s important for all our residents to have access to decent sports and leisure facilities so they can keep active at any age.
“I hear there are spare rackets kept in the ROSE community centre so encourage everyone to have a go at keeping fit with their friends and neighbours.”
Martin McGuire, Chief Operating Officer of Careys Civil Engineering, said:
“We look to positively engage and interact with the communities we work alongside. With the support of Careys Foundation we are proud to refurbish the ball court on Savona Estate, providing the local community with a great facility to enjoy a range of ball and racket sports.”
Simon Murphy, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company, added:
“The refurbishment of this ball court is a great achievement for all those involved. We’re very pleased with the improvement to the court’s facilities and we hope the local community enjoy it and get a lot of use out of it in the many years to come.”

“This court is a great asset for us and I was pleased to be able to thank everyone involved in delivering this in the Savona estate.”
