More than 300 local people came to Battersea Power Station’s jobs fair earlier this week –  with some already going on to complete interviews and received job offers.

The event was hosted by Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) and its primary construction contractors Carillion (Phase 1 -Circus West), Skanska (Phase 2 – Power Station) and Bouygues UK (Phase 3 – Electric Boulevard).

It was held on Tuesday 19 January at the Rose Community Centre, close to the 42-acre development site in Nine Elms.

With construction work well underway on the first two phases and enabling works due to start of phase three in the next few months, the event gave local people the chance to engage with the development’s main contractors and six of their sub-contractors that currently have positions available.

Five people who attended the event have already been interviewed by O’Neill and Brennan (Phase 1 – Site Services and Logistics) and offered work on Circus West.

Wandsworth Council’s Work Match local recruitment team were also there to offer access to range of training programmes and other live job vacancies from across Wandsworth. More than 200 local people signed up for the service.

CV workshops were on offer at the Rose Centre, with many attendees taking the opportunity to discuss how best to showcase their skills and experience.

Rob Tincknell, CEO of BPSDC, said: “With a wide variety of positions available currently on the different construction phases at the Power Station development site, this is a suitable time for us to raise the profile of the breadth of work available and ensure those that are keen to pursue a career in construction at the Power Station know how to apply.”

Cllr Ravi Govindia, Wandsworth Council Leader, said: “I want to thank the Power Station team for going the extra mile to ensure local people are taking advantage of the career opportunities this development is bringing to Battersea.”

Current Battersea Power Station construction related vacancies include:

• Painting/Decorating/Plumbing/Scaffolding Apprentices;
• Trainee Site Manager;
• Administration Assistant;
• Carpenters and Carpentry Labourers
• Steel Erectors;
• Design Managers;
• Information Systems Correspondents;
• Mechanical Managers;
• Quantity Surveyors and Assistants;

The sub-contractors in attendance at the event from Circus West (Phase 1) were O’ Neill and Brennan (Site Services and Logistics), Adey Steel (Structural Frames and Fit-Out), Price Building Services (HVAC and Pipe-Fitting) and two fit-out contractors CIE Kitchen Installation and Loughton Flooring. Power Station sub-contractor, Blu-3 (Groundworks) also attended the event, together with Skanska’s Emerging Talent team.

Representatives from BPSDC’s Battersea Academy of Skills Excellence were also on hand to discuss the longer-term roles that will become available on the estate in the retail, hospitality, catering and estate management sectors. The first of these jobs will become available later this year, ahead of the first residents moving into Circus West from late 2016 onwards.
