Residents of Nine Elms, north Battersea, are being offered the chance to join a free weekly yoga class.

The Hatha Yoga sessions will be held between 6.30pm and 8pm every Tuesday at the Rose Community Centre, in Ascalon Street, by experienced instructor Arnab Datta.

The class is designed for beginners wanting to learn and acquire some of the health benefits from the 5,000-year-old discipline.

Places will be offered on a first come, first served basis and there is a maximum capacity of 16 per class. Residents are advised to arrive in good time to avoid disappointment and yoga mats will be provided.

Arnab said: “I have been practicing yoga for many years and it feels like it is time to give something back and that is why I am not charging for the classes. The benefits of practicing yoga are proven – but you need to be shown the basics so you can get started.

“My classes are for anyone who wants to try yoga, even if they have no experience at all.  To start with I will be providing classes aimed at beginners and later I will look to introduce more advanced sessions.”

The Rose Centre offers a range of clubs and services including:

  • A weekly gardening club
  • A weekly Zumba dance class
  • Weekly piano lessons every Monday ( term time only)
  • Monthly credit union advice sessions  – free information about personal finances and low cost loans
  • Monthly health promotion clinic, including sexual health screening, BMI, blood pressure and Cholesterol checks
