A brand new health centre for Nine Elms has been given the green light thanks to a funding agreement between Wandsworth Council and NHS Property Services.

The new health centre on Sleaford Street will include a GP practice as well as communal areas for health and wellbeing activities and is estimated to open in winter 2023. It is being built within Phase 4a of the Battersea Power Station £9bn regeneration project.

Wandsworth Council’s £12.99m investment will fund the purchase of the lease, design and fitout of the NHS health centre.

The new facilities are central to plans that ensure all local residents will have the health provision they need as the area continues to develop and the number of people living in the area grows.

By 2030, the population of the Nine Elms Vauxhall regeneration zone is estimated to reach 33,000 people.

Councillor Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “This is real and tangible progress on our promise to deliver improved access to healthcare for our established and new resident communities in Nine Elms.

“These state-of-the-art health facilities are part of a whole new network of social and transport infrastructure for the area, which includes parks, community and cultural spaces and two new Tube stations delivered without major taxpayer subsidy.”

The council is using financial contributions from local developments to invest in the new health centre as part of a package of improvements to local transport connections, parks, community, school and health facilities.

The health centre site will be leased from Peabody, who in partnership with Battersea Power Station will deliver 386 new homes in Phase 4a, which will be a mix of shared ownership and affordable rent for local people and workers.

South West London Clinical Commissioning Group (SWLCCG), Clinical Vice Chair and GP Borough Lead for Wandsworth Dr Nicola Jones said: “Securing this funding is great news for local patients, NHS staff and the wider public in Wandsworth. It is an important step towards our aim of providing a modern, purpose-built health centre for local people.

“Not only will the proposed new facility offer a modern environment for Nine Elms’ growing population, it will complement the development plans for the wider area too.

“We will, of course, work closely with the community over the coming years to ensure services are convenient for our patients living in the new development and from surrounding areas in North Battersea.”

NHS Property Services (NHSPS) Senior Transaction Manager Gillian Sheeran said: “NHS Property Services is pleased to be supporting NHS South West London CCG by managing the health centre design, proposed fitout and legal agreements required to fund and facilitate it.

“We are committed to helping the NHS get the best from their estate, enabling the delivery of excellent patient care through facilities like this health centre.”

About the new health facilities

The NHS Nine Elms Vauxhall Healthcare Programme is responsible for developing healthcare facilities within the Opportunity Area to mitigate the impact of the development on existing services and provide for the new population.

The new primary healthcare facilities in Phase 4a of the Battersea Power Station development are being built as part of the NHS Nine Elms Vauxhall Healthcare Programme to meet the need for additional medical services arising from development in the local area.

As well as funding the health centre, Wandsworth Council secured space for the provision of an NHS health centre as part of the planning permission for Phase 4a of the Battersea Power Station development.

The new facility on Sleaford Street will be designed as a Primary Care Medical Centre to meet the primary care needs of up to 20,000 patients and provide flexible capacity which will support future changes to healthcare needs in the area.

The NHS Nine Elms Vauxhall Healthcare Programme also includes the proposed expansion of three practices in Lambeth, funded by Lambeth Council.
