Nine Elms is set for an exciting programme of international contemporary art following confirmation that Matt’s Gallery is moving to a new gallery space on Ponton Road, SW8. In addition to boasting double-height gallery space, the building complex will provide two galleries, two artists’ studios, gallery shop and a project and events space. The building will also house a publicly accessible archive dating back to the 1960s.

As the latest cultural organisation set to move into Nine Elms, Matt’s Gallery’s reputation for cutting-edge exhibitions will give a boost to the growing art galleries cluster which runs through the opportunity area from Battersea and Nine Elms up to Vauxhall.

Cllr Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council said: “We are delighted to welcome Matt’s Gallery as a key cultural asset for Nine Elms and look forward to a rich programme of high-quality art exhibitions and installations. This is an exciting new addition to Nine Elms’ growing reputation as a cultural destination.

“Importantly, this news also means that local communities are a step closer to enjoying arts and educational activities right on their doorstep as well as benefiting from the opportunities that arts and culture can bring.”

Director and Founder of Matt’s Gallery, Robin Klassnik OBE said: “We’re excited about moving to Nine Elms. We are keen to get started and hope that Wandsworth locals embrace the gallery as their own. It is truly encouraging to see Wandsworth Council and Bellway delivering challenging and radical contemporary art to Nine Elms.”

Emma Hamlett, Sales Director for Bellway London, said: “The Residence is more than a development of new apartments, it is now also home to a fantastic collection of art for enthusiasts across Nine Elms to enjoy for years to come.

“We’re delighted to house Matt’s Gallery at The Residence, which really sets this development apart as something special.”

Currently located in Bermondsey, registered charity Matt’s Gallery is now preparing to fit out the new Ponton Road complex ahead of a public opening in spring 2020. Working closely with Wandsworth Council and Bellway Homes, who are providing the community space at The Residence, they are working with local residents through three ‘meanwhile’ projects ahead of the opening, including ‘UNSUNG SONGS’ with artist Silvia Ziranek.

The agreement follows news in October 2018 that Arts Council England are providing a £200,000 capital grant to assist the gallery to move to their permanent home in Nine Elms. Matt’s Gallery are fundraising to reach a total of £1.15m to fully fit out the building.
