Take part in a free workshop to help create a poetic snapshot of Nine Elms in 2022.

Three poems will be created by Hilaire from texts found on the walks, and participants can create a poem responding to the changes in Nine Elms. These will be published in a free booklet in a free booklet by lower case press later this year.

There are three workshops taking place in June. Each will start at the ROSE Community Clubroom, with an introduction outlining the session, an explanation of ‘found text’ and an example of a poem created from found text.

You’ll then walk around part of the Nine Elms area to gather found texts – words and phrases from signs, posters, graffiti and so on. The walk will last around an hour and 15 minutes, ending back at the ROSE. Each workshop will follow a different route, detailed below.

On returning to the ROSE, you’ll collect all the texts, and look at different ways of creating a poem from found text.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll have drafted at least one poem made from found text.

Workshop 1

Tuesday 14 June, 10am to 1pm

The walk will explore sites including Battersea Exchange and Berkeley Group’s Prince of Wales Drive development.

Workshop 2

Thursday 16 June, 2pm to 5pm

The walk will explore sites including Battersea Power Station and Riverlight Quay.

Workshop 3

Tuesday 21 June, 6pm to 9pm

The walk will explore sites including Nine Elms Park and Embassy Gardens.

Light refreshments will be provided.

The walk routes have been created to be step free, but some pavements on the routes are narrow or uneven. You will be walking near construction sites, so may need to pause or change route due to site traffic. The walks are planned to go ahead unless extreme weather is forecast. Please dress appropriately.

Suitable for ages 18 and over. No writing experience necessary!

Hilaire’s poetry workshops were selected by the Nine Elms community as part of this year’s Movement and Metamorphosis – Make Art in Nine Elms’ event programme, sponsored by Wandsworth Council.
