Outer Limits: Summer of Public Art in Nine Elms, follows on from the success of Art Night, which exploded across the area in July with a series of temporary commissions curated by the Hayward Gallery and other artist projects. These explored themes of home and urban landscape and took over public and private spaces for the all-night festival.
Outer Limits continues to explore public art across the area for the remainder of the summer and beyond. Throughout August a series of projects and performances highlight the artworks that are already in Nine Elms, reconnect with the ideas behind them and find new ways to reanimate the familiar public realm – inviting us to look again at our surroundings.
The programme includes interventions and projects by Luca Bosani, Gabriella Hirst, Kathy MacCarthy and choreographer Lorraine Roberts.
Alongside this programme of events, the Art Night legacy continues, as commissions by Suzanne Treister at Battersea Power Station and Anna Skaldmann at New Covent Garden Market remain in place over August and beyond.
To share these projects, and to highlight future cultural programming across the area, design practice The Decorators have created a series of noticeboards. Launching at Bourne Valley Wharf by the new Nine Elms Pavilion and opposite the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, these will remain in place for the next two years. The structures create space to share what is happening as well as creating space to share creative projects. These noticeboards will be updated seasonally to reflect the seasonal cultural programme in Nine Elms.
The noticeboards will launch with a project by the US Embassy, who will be sharing their augmented reality app to connect residents and visitors to the area with the artworks commissioned for their new building, including by Mark Bradford, Rachel Whiteread and Jenny Holzer.
