About the artists

World Heart Beat Music Academy

World Heart Beat Music Academy provides high-quality music education and fulfilling personal development opportunities for children and young people from low income and disadvantaged backgrounds, living in Wandsworth and the surrounding boroughs.

Set to move into new premises in Nine Elms in 2022, World Heart Beat Music Academy will be providing three live music performances at Happy Streets.

Brazilian band (led by Ava Joseph)

As a young musician Ava Joseph developed vastly when World Heart Beat invited Brazilian musicians for a 3-month residency. Since then she’s enjoyed working in many different settings but that early learning helped ignite, shape and solidify a deep connection and love for this music and all its traditions. She’s a gifted performer and songwriter who has performed in the most prestigious venues across the country and abroad. She also attends the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy and is a bandleader and project Impressario. Her most recent performance called Operation Forest saw her directing her own choir and band.

Otto and the Muhatapa Calling

Otto & The Mutapa Calling is a lively London based marimba band playing energetic, joyful music from Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, including folk songs, original songs and popular southern African covers. The band’s set-up includes soprano, tenor and baritone marimbas, mbira, hosho, drumming and singing, with both traditional and contemporary dances. The marimba band’s sound is full of energy and pulsating rhythms – and our music shares the rich cultures, histories and stories of the people of southern Africa.

The band was officially formed in 2017 by band leader, Otto Gumaelius, who started playing African music on the marimba in the late 1990s in Botswana, and the band is comprised of musicians from Botswana, Zimbabwe and the UK.

Otto & The Mutapa Calling is a unique and colourful experience and is the only active professional marimba band of its kind in all of Europe.

World Heart Beat Gig Band

Musical performances from World Heart Beat’s ‘Gig’ Bands will present a wonderful programme spanning a whole host of contemporary popular music genres.

Do What Yah Mother Told Yah by Just More productions

Just More is a family-led company from first and second generations of the alternative travelling circus community.

‘Do What Yah Mother Told Yah!’ is a feast of food fusion and storytelling across geography and generations, in this immersive and vibrant comedy cooking show.

The 30-min outdoor comedy slapstick circus show, where the audience is then encouraged to join in some hula-hoop and plate spinning, has had a very warm and positive response!

Join Just More Productions for their Hula Jam workshop at The Pen for music, dancing and hula-hooping!

Impact Dance

Impact Dance will teach a 20-minute taster workshop in the style of their renowned Impact Academy that has been training young people in Hip-Hop dance for 26 years.

Dancers from Impact Academy will be performing at Happy Streets with a brand new piece choreographed by Cherilyn Albert.

Impact Dance is a Hip-Hop Theatre Company, Street Dance Organisation and Educational Facilitator with a UK-wide reach and a global footprint.

This summer Battersea Arts Centre and Impact Dance are working together to deliver three dance events for young people in Wandsworth and Nine Elms. Happy Streets is the first in the series and following this young people aged 11-19 are invited to Battersea Arts Centre where they’ll be able to participate in a Taster Session and Pilot Term of the dance academy.

The Impact Dance workshop is for children and young people ages 11-19.

BAC Beatbox Academy

The show will compered by Conrad Murray, with a performance of sounds, beats and covers by BAC Beatbox Academy.

BAC Beatbox Academy started in 2008. It is a place where anyone can come and create sounds and performance regardless of experience. The group is run by artist, musician and theatre maker Conrad Murray.

They love to perform covers and create original material and sounds.

Nine Elms Arts Ministry

Nine Elms Arts Ministry host events and gatherings that bring people together around creativity, wellbeing and spirituality in Nine Elms/Battersea.

Artists from Nine Elms Arts Ministry will be running Arts Wellbeing Pop-Up Workshops throughout the day.

Create beautiful Butterflies expressing your deepest wishes and aspirations. Enjoy the serenity of painting stunning Sea Fans and take home a beautiful painted tile. Create inspiring painted stones and help make a pathway of peace. Sculpt Bowls of Hope and decorate with nature inspired designs. Create simple but beautiful nature displays for your home. Each activity will last 15-30 mins. The activities are suitable for all ages but must be accompanied by a parent/carer.

WHABBStudio

WHABBstudio is a creative duo based in Nine Elms. The studio works collectively to explore our changing world and humans’ impact on the environment using emerging technologies to communicate the climate crisis.

Citizens of the Climate is a collection of personal written responses and audio recordings from the people of the London Borough of Wandsworth on how they feel climate change is affecting the environment in which we live.

Discover the stories situated around Wandsworth by scanning QR codes for the audio version or reading the text on laser engraved offcut panels. A digital online map of Wandsworth will accompany the stories, plotting the artwork’s positions, including the audio stories. Take your headphones to listen to the stories when visiting the panels.

At Happy Streets, the stories will be seen performed live.

The People Speak

Welcome to Talkaoke – an interactive pop-up talk show where you, the participants, decide on the direction of the conversation. The format is simple – the host sits in the middle of a doughnut-shaped table, and you sit on the outside with your own mic. The conversation is a journey from one unexpected subject to another. It can be topical, funny, deep, out-there, or all of the above. During Happy Streets Festival we would love to hear your ideas for events, activities and community projects to celebrate the Northern Line extension in Nine Elms, which we will visualise live! This activity is suitable for all ages.

The People Speak are an East London-based creative collective of international artists, academics and arts practitioners. They use performance art, multi-media and technology to stimulate discussion, ideas, and actions in interactive and fun environments.
