Lambeth Council has approved plans for a St James Group development at Eastbury House on the Albert Embankment.
The 11-storey office block on the corner of Tinworth Street will be demolished to make way for a mixed use scheme of up to 28 storeys designed by Roger Stirk Harbour and Partners. The new development will provide 48 new homes, along with café or retail space, office accommodation and a public piazza.
The new building will be set further back from the street, increasing the width of the footpath along the Albert Embankment and improving the views of the river from Tinworth Street. The Design Council CABE has expressed support for the proposal, remarking that is has the makings of a successful urban tower.
This is another major scheme within the Nine Elms on the South Bank. The area is set to provide 16,000 new homes and up to 25,000 jobs within a riverside location stretching from Battersea Power Station through to Lambeth Bridge.
Cllr Steve Reed, Leader of Lambeth Council, said:
“We’re expecting up to 3,500 new homes to be built in the Vauxhall area alone within the next ten years. We will continue to work with developers to make sure we get good quality, well designed schemes that contribute towards our vision to recreate a lively riverside town centre.”
To prepare for large scale growth in the area, Lambeth Council is developing a supplementary planning document for the Vauxhall and Albert Embankment area. This paints a clear picture of the area in ten years’ time and acts as a guide for developers devising schemes for individual sites. The council expects to publish the draft SPD for consultation in October.
